It wasn’t so long ago that Jared Goff was seen merely as a salary dump in the Matthew Stafford trade, helping the Detroit Lions reset. But flash forward three seasons, and you can see that Goff simply needed a change of scenery to thrive.
While the Rams did win a Super Bowl with Stafford, the Lions have done well themselves after the January 2021 deal. Having netted two first-round picks and a third on top of Goff, this move helped jumpstart the competitive window for Detroit.
Coming off a loss in the NFC Championship Game, the Lions will again rely on Goff to make the postseason. Once seen as an afterthought, Goff is now relevant in both the NFL and for dynasty fantasy football.
The 2023 Year in Review
While he threw double-digit interceptions for the first time since 2020, Goff threw 30 touchdowns, the second-most in his career. Having finished as the QB7 last year, Goff produced one of the most well-rounded seasons in his career.
Post-charting summary: Jared Goff
— Derrik Klassen (@QBKlass) July 5, 2023
As always, Goff was a machine throwing glances, crossers, etc. from under center PA. Was his bread and butter in Los Angeles and he's still one of the best at it. Decisive w/ good velocity and placement. pic.twitter.com/HeWkG8Geq7
As an offense, Detroit finished third in total yards and yards per game, second in passing yards per game (258.9), and fifth in average points per game (27.1). These metrics say that Goff had a huge hand in them, helping grow his dynasty value.
Goff expanded his relationship with Amon-Ra St. Brown to the tune of 119 receptions, 1,515 yards, and 10 TDs. But the emergence of rookie tight end Sam LaPorta was just as important, bursting onto the scene with 86/889/10.
2024 Outlook
Goff’s dynasty upside relies on his pocket passing, as he is no real threat to run the ball. With a 1-2 punch at running back with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, Goff’s legs aren’t really needed anyway.
A top-tier offensive line, paired with skill position depth, gives Goff a good shot at repeating his 2023 performance. Detroit faces an uphill battle when facing the 11th-toughest schedule in 2024, including road games in Dallas, Houston, and San Francisco.
From Goff’s perspective, his weaponry remains the same. With no change at RB or WR, adding Kevin Zeitler as the starting right guard was all the help Goff received.
While it isn’t sexy, it’s in the possible outcomes for Goff to be another QB1 this upcoming season. With St. Brown and LaPorta staying in their roles, plus the hopeful emergence of Jameson Williams, this offense is built to last, helping drive up Goff’s value.
Current Dynasty Trade Value
Being that he is 29 years old, you probably want to be in more of a competitive window if you want to acquire Goff. While he does have solid value, long term he isn’t a build-around asset, so make sure your roster is at worse a fringe competitor.
From the DynastyNerds community, here are a few trades involving Goff:
- (SF TEP) Jared Goff for Deshaun Watson & 2025 1st
- (SF TEP) Jared Goff & 2024 3rd for Terry McLaurin, Jake Ferguson, & Wan’Dale Robinson
- (SF) Jared Goff, 2024 1st & 3rd for CJ Stroud
- (SF) Jared Goff for Deebo Samuel, Nick Chubb & 2025 3rd
Based on these deals, it’s obvious that the dynasty community is invested in Goff, but all at their own values. Another option is if you have Goff, now is the time to cash in that value, as is seen in the Goff deal for Stroud.
Final Thoughts
Looking back a few years, it doesn’t feel possible that Goff would have this much value, but a change of scenery can do a lot for a player. Having just signed a new four-year deal this offseason, Goff remains the long-term starter moving forward.
While his QB7 numbers look solid, he finished just outside QB1 range when considering points per game of QBs that made six-plus starts last season. Goff will have his down games, but overall, he is a steady option for your dynasty team.
If you are looking for that final piece to compete without breaking the bank, Goff should top your list. Surrounded by a ton of young talent, Goff is in a perfect spot to deliver another strong season for your dynasty roster in 2024 – and beyond.
