Tez Johnson | Player Introduction
For a variety of reasons, Keyonteze “Tez” Johnson is a very unique prospect. He was the 1,467th ranked recruit coming out of Pinson, AL, a town of fewer than 8,000 people, just north of Birmingham. Like many unheralded recruits, he stayed close to him, joining the Troy Trojans, a few hours south of his hometown. However, what makes Johnson unique is not that he was a small-time recruit that made it to the NFL’s doorstep, but rather that his small stature makes him an NFL outlier. At a mere 154 pounds, Johnson will be one of the lightest players in the NFL. Two of the closest wide receivers to play near Johnson’s size are Trindon Holliday and Deven Thompkins.
However, Tez Johnson could be one to break the mold. He has proven the doubters wrong at every level. His 62 collegiate games is also a rarity in today’s landscape. In his three seasons at Troy, Johnson steadily improved, earning All-Sun Belt Third Team honors before transferring to Oregon to play with his brother, Bo Nix. In his first season in Eugene, OR, Johnson set the school’s single-season record for receptions. He followed it up with an outstanding 2024 campaign, catching 83 more passes and collecting All Big-Ten Second Team honors.
Mike Johrendt’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board
No. 26 Overall | Ranked WR10
The small stature of Tez Johnson worries me, as he looks the part of another Tank Dell. But because his elusiveness and route-running is so sudden, Johnson has the skills to make up for his size. Johnson should be a Day 2 pick, filling the role of a vertical threat in a passing attack.
Doc Matthew Mitchell’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board
No. 30 Overall | Ranked WR9
Tez Johnson is one of the most explosive playmakers in the nation. If only he was a little bigger, as 156 pounds is dangerously light for an NFL athlete. But, when you can run like the wind, anything is possible. Hopefully he is closer to Tank Dell than Tutu Atwell.
Keith Ensminger’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board
No. 32 Overall | Ranked WR9
The electric Tez Johnson is a monster after the catch. He has elite acceleration and tackle avoidance. At his size, he does not do well with press coverage, and I worry that he may not be physical enough to succeed in the pros as well as he did at the collegiate level. Tez Johnson may likely be a player better suited to help an NFL team than he does our dynasty rosters.
Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine WR Rankings
Overall Ranked WR11
Without a doubt, the biggest conundrum of this wide receiver class is Oregon’s Tez Johnson. The biggest question mark heading into the Senior Bowl was his size. Johnson measured in at barely over 5’9’’ and 156 pounds. Then, he proceeded to tear up the defensive backs during the practice all week. His chances at success will come down to how well he can hold up at this size and if he puts on weight. As a prospect, he has game-breaking speed and quickness, runs good routes, catches the ball with ease, and is lethal after the catch. I’m going to let the 2025 NFL Draft help me with Tez Johnson’s value.
Tez Johnson | Draft Outlook
After a lackluster NFL Combine, the NFL Draft buzz has quieted a bit for Tez Johnson. The most likely scenario is that he will be selected late on Day 2 of the draft or potentially into Day 3. Similarly, his fantasy outlook has taken a slide after the NFL Combine. Tez Johnson should be going off the board in the 3rd or 4th rounds of your rookie drafts, but couple provide value if he’s able to once again prove the doubters wrong.
