Omarion Hampton | Player Introduction

As a 4-star recruit out of Clayton, NC, Omarion Hampton had his pick of colleges to attend. He decided to stay close to home, taking the 45-minute trip east to Chapel Hill. After being used sparingly as a freshman, Hampton tore up his competition for the past two years. He had perhaps the quietest 3,164 rushing yards and 30 TDs that any running back could have over a 2 season span.

It’s not to say that he didn’t receive recognition, he’s just been overshadowed by some of the other backs in the class. In 2023, Hampton was named as a first team All-ACC and second team All-American selection. He also was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. Hampton also doubled down on the first team All-ACC selection again in 2024.

No. 7 Overall Prospect | Ranked as RB2

Are you and your dynasty rosters in the market for a running back or two? Great news! The 2025 Rookie Big Board includes so many phenomenal running back prospects, and one of the most talented backs out of the Power Four conferences is Omarion Hampton from North Carolina. A three-sport athlete in high school, Hampton chose to stay close to home in Carolina despite having offers to programs like Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.

Omarion Hampton is an explosive, violent runner who has solid straight-line speed. He may not be as elusive or twitchy as other backs in this class, but he makes up for it by finishing off runs by lowering his shoulders into the heart and guts of tacklers. Hampton went over 100 yards rushing in 10 of his 12 games this season, finishing with 1,660 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns. As notably, Hampton added 38 receptions for 373 yards and 2 touchdowns, showcasing his ability as a receiving threat.

No. 8 Overall Prospect | Ranked as RB3

Nearly on the same level as Henderson, UNC’s Omarion Hampton is the RB3 on my 2025 Rookie Big Board, and he has become one of my favorite watches on tape this offseason. His tape isn’t perfect, as the Tar Heels offense was inefficient last year, but Hampton was one of a few bright spots on that unit.

Patient yet decisive, Hampton’s game tape stands out in a really good and deep running back class. Hampton is an early declarant, running for over 1,500 yards in each of his final two seasons. His contributions in the passing game can’t go unnoticed either, as he caught 29+ passes in his final two seasons. His ability to contribute in both areas of the offense will likely make him a Day 2 selection in April.

Doc Matthew Mitchell’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 10 Overall Prospect | Ranked as RB5

Omarion Hampton is another player rising up my draft board. Hampton came into the college ranks as one of the top high school RBs in his class. He chose North Carolina over a list of some of the best college programs in the nation. Over the last two seasons he has put up back-to-back 1,500+ yard seasons with 15 TDs in each. He managed to do all this while averaging a nice 5.9 ypc. He also did a really nice job in the passing game, playing an active role in the Tar Heels aerial plans.

Hampton is a player who will be in contention for a major rise up draft boards following the NFL Draft. There are a number of really talented RBs in this class that will see their values solidify once their eventual destination and draft stock is known. I think he has some Kareem Hunt or David Montgomery to his game – a player that can do everything really well, he just doesn’t have that overdrive gear. Nonetheless, he will be a really nice dynasty asset who is almost guaranteed to see his name called by the end of Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine RB Rankings

No. 4 Overall Running Back

Omarion Hampton is also a powerful runner that has great short-area burst. While he does have a little bit of wiggle, he doesn’t possess elite elusiveness. However, that hasn’t hurt him much as he tends to run through defenders rather than around them. Hampton is the most violent runner in the 2025 RB class. It’s easy to see the comparisons to another former Tar Heel, Javonte Williams, when he runs.

Hampton shows good vision and patience and has plenty of burst to hit the hole as it opens. However, like many of the backs in this class, I worry about his long speed as he rarely runs away from defenders chasing him down. As we know, long speed is not the most important trait for a running back to have. As long as his explosion testing metrics match what he’s put on tape, he should be a lock to go on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Omarion Hampton | Draft Outlook

Omarion Hampton is quickly becoming a darling of the 2024 NFL Draft. If he wasn’t a running back, Hampton would be nearly a lock for the 1st Round. However, he might get pushed down into the early part of Day 2. He is routinely ranked inside the top 20 prospects on NFL Draft big boards, including being the 14th-best prospect in Mel Kiper’s latest update (ESPN+). For fantasy, Hampton could sneak inside the top 4 picks of SF rookie drafts. Most often, I expect him to go off the board in the 1.05-1.08 range.
