Mason Taylor | Player Introduction

The tight end position in college football is unpredictable and few players epitomize that more than former 3-star TE prospect Mason Taylor. The son of Hall of Fame linebacker Jason Taylor, Mason burst onto the collegiate season as a true freshman in 2022. He caught 38 passes for 414 yards and 3 TDs, setting a record for freshmen TEs at LSU, earning freshman All-SEC honors. However, his sophomore saw a decrease in all receiving metrics.

Needing a bounce-back, Taylor delivered. His 2024 season of 55 receptions for 546 yards and 2 scores rewrote LSU’s record books, making Taylor the most productive tight end in school history. For his performance, Taylor was named to the third-team All-SEC squad.

Jayson Snyder in 1QB TE Prem Mock Draft 2.0 (Sneak Preview)

Selected at 3.06 | Overall TE5 Drafted

You may recall that I was debating the idea of selecting Mason Taylor with my 2.12 draft pick. The son of Dolphins Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, Mason comes to the NFL with a unique understanding of the family business. He is a smooth hands catcher who is a threat to make plays all over the field. Some have him rated firmly as the number 3 tight end of this class, even above Elijah Arroyo, who I selected a full round earlier in this mock. Current projections have him fetching early Day 2 draft capital, and if he finds his way to a juicy landing spot, you can expect his value to explode.

Nobody walks into the room and looks the part more than Mason Taylor. If you mistake him for something other than a football player, it could be an NBA power forward. It’s impossible to think that he is anything but an athlete. The college production was never impressive, but at 20-years old, Taylor has potential to be a better pro than college football player. I mocked Taylor to the Bengals in the 3rd Round of my Mock Draft 3.0. This landing spot would be awesome for him to join in an explosive offense with an elite QB. In a tight end premium league, I’m loving the value of taking Mason Taylor in the middle of the 3rd round.

I genuinely wouldn’t consider trading this pick away. I think the players drafted in this range will have more upside than any possible asset for which they could be swapped. If people came to me with a future 2nd for this pick, I would definitely consider it, but I think there are some hangups with that trade. First, who says Mason Taylor won’t be worth more than a 2nd a year from now? Second, what is the depth of the 2026 class going to look like? I really like Mason Taylor and other players in this range and would look to acquire more early 3rd round picks, not fewer.

Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine Rankings

No. 6 Overall Tight End

Many of the prospects in my Tight End Rankings offer alignment versatility, creating mismatches across the yard. LSU’s Mason Taylor is no different. He moves in and out of his breaks smoothly, has soft hands, and excels at gaining yards after a catch. If his speed and burst scores are good, he could join Tier 2.

Mason Taylor | Draft Outlook

Mason Taylor’s draft stock has become somewhat of a runaway train. Since the end of the college football regular season, he’s skyrocketed up draft boards to the point of of consideration as the TE3 in this class. It would not be a shock if his name is called early on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. If that happens, Taylor’s dynasty stock will take a big jump as well. He will likely be a 2nd round rookie pick in TE premium formats and off teh board by the early 3rd in all formats.
