Jalen Royals | Player Introduction
Any time you have a prospect coming out of a small school like Utah State, it’s safe to guess that he was probably not a highly-ranked recruit. That holds true for Jalen Royals. In fact, he wasn’t ranked at all in the 2021 recruiting cycle. Royals didn’t take long to show off his athletic prowess, tallying 71 receptions for 1,080 yards and 15 TDs during his first real playing time in 2023.
That season caught the attention of the national media as Royals earned second team All-American honors as well as making the first team All-Mountain West team. Somewhat surprisingly, Royals returned for the 2024 season. He had 55 receptions for 834 yards and 6 TDs during the team’s first 7 games and was once again on track for a big season before a foot injury ended his season and collegiate career.
Mike Johrendt’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board
No. 18 Overall Prospect | Ranked as WR6
Utah State receiver Jalen Royals makes his inaugural appearance at 18th on my Big Board, as he fought through inconsistent QB play to get into rookie draft contention. Royals racked up the majority of his yards in 4 games this past season, including 9 receptions for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns against Boise State. Royals can be a big-play option in an NFL offense, but he might have a slower start to his NFL career, so don’t necessarily expect major contributions in year 1.
Doc Matthew Mitchell’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board
No. 35 Overall Prospect | Ranked as WR8
Jalen Royals has the size and speed to play on the outside at the next level, while also possessing the quickness and route running to kick into the slot if necessary. He roasted the competition in the Mountain West over the last couple years and was the star of the Senior Bowl.
Bobby Bishop in 3 Round 1QB Mock
Selected at 3.07 | Drafted as WR12
With the 31st pick in the 1QB Rookie Mock, I selected Jalen Royals. Unfortunately, a foot injury ended Royals 2024 season, but by that point, Royals had already solidified himself as a Day 2 pick. In only 7 games, Jalen Royals had already gone over 800 yards receiving. In 2023, he had 1,080 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Royals is a very smooth receiver who becomes a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Over half of his 2024 receiving yards came after the catch.
The NFL loves receivers of the Jalen Royals mold. Players like Jayden Reed and Deebo Samuel also fit the bill of those who can do so much after the catch. It makes it easy on the quarterback to get the ball to a guy like this in space and let him go to work. Royals will likely start as his team’s 3rd-best receiver in the NFL, but I think he has a chance to eventually be one of the main focuses of his offense. When his team realizes that he is such a dynamic weapon, they will want to get him the ball as often as possible. I’m targeting Royals in the late 2nd, early 3rd round of rookie drafts.
Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine Rankings
No. 7 Overall Wide Receiver
Despite not playing the back half of the 2024 season, Utah State’s Jalen Royals, is holding strong as a Tier 2 receiver in my 2025 WR Rankings. Instead of attempting to come back this season from the aforementioned foot injury, Royals decided to focus on his pre-draft preparation. He possesses an intriguing combination of speed and ball skills. Royals gets up to speed quickly and is a polished route runner. He catches the ball easily and does a good job gaining yards after the catch. If he runs fast, expect the hype train to take off.
Jalen Royals | Draft Outlook
The NFL Draft capital for Jalen Royals is quite varied. He has the potential to be drafted on Day 2, but could also slide down into the 4th or 5th round. His dynasty rookie draft value will largely be landing spot and draft capital dependent. He’s most likely going to be coming off the board around the beginning of the 3rd round of rookie drafts.
