Gunnar Helm | Player Introduction
It’s not often that a former 3-star tight end recruit from Englewood, CO ends up leading the Texas Longhorns in receptions, but that was exactly the case for Gunnar Helm in 2024. Despite his 3-star status, Helm garnered offers from blue-chip programs like Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and Penn State, among others. His collegiate career took a while to take off, notching only 19 receptions prior to the 2024 season. However, this year he showed off his receiving ability to the tune of 60 receptions, 786 yards receiving, and 7 TDs. Those markers were good enough for 1st, 2nd, and 2nd on his team and earned himself a semifinalist spot for the John Mackey Award.

Another player invited to the Senior Bowl, Gunnar Helm stepped up this year for Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense. Helm has soft hands and fluid movements and is everything you want in a fantasy tight end. One thing I always like to see in these prospects is how they play against the best teams and on the biggest stages. With big games against Michigan, Georgia, and Clemson, he also helped Texas to victory against Arizona State in the College Football Playoffs. He is not a great blocker, so that may limit his initial career playing time. However, I believe with time and coaching, Helm will rise to become a better-than-average fantasy starter at tight end.

No. 5 Overall Tight End
A player that broke out in 2024 and put himself on the NFL’s radar is Gunnar Helm. He led Texas in receptions and was 2nd in yards receiving and touchdowns. He has flashed impressive athleticism both at the catch point and in the open field. Helm runs clean routes and is natural catching passes all over the field. He isn’t the most athletic TE prospect but has plenty of athleticism to make it at the NFL level.
Mychal Warno in the Latest SF TE Premium Mock Draft
No. 34 Overall Selection | 3.10 | Drafted as TE5
Gunnar Helm is a prospect who deserves more recognition than he is receiving. When watching Helm, I see many of the same attributes as former 2nd Round draft pick Cole Kmet. At 6’5”, Helm is a quarterback-friendly target with impressive athleticism. Helm has the possibility of being a 3rd Round draft pick, and I would love to see him with the Los Angeles Chargers if they don’t address tight end earlier.
Gunnar Helm | Draft Outlook
Gunnar Helm will likely be drafted early on the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft. He suffered an ankle injury during the NFL Combine that severely impacted his athletic testing numbers. However, with the depth of this class at the TE position, Round 3 is the best-case scenario with rounds 4 or 5 being most likely. For fantasy, Helm’s value will largely be landing-spot dependent. In TE premium leagues, he’s worth a pick in the late 3rd round or later.
