The Jaguars had a gaping hole at the tight end position year after year. They have one now in Evan Engram, who signed with the team late last night. He signed for just one year as they look to see what they can do in the post-apocalyptic world that Urban Meyer left them in.
The signing should point to much brighter days for Engram and his new quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Engram will be leaning on Lawrence and new head coach Doug Pederson to restore the glory of his rookie season. At age 27, that breakout rookie year seems like a complete afterthought. The way Pederson has shown he can gameplan with his TEs, we may have some juice worth squeezing out of Engram yet.
In his last three years, Engram saw his reception distance drop each year, and he only has had three 100-yard receiving games in his career. Compared to what Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert were able to accomplish under Pederson, they had 11 combined 100-yard games. Engram fits more into the Ertz mold of the two, which means he can be used as more than a TE in the offense.
His current Dynasty Nerds ranking has him as TE17 behind guys like Irv Smith Jr., Hunter Henry, and Logan Thomas. I would take Engram over all of these guys. He may even crack the top ten heading into next year. The problem with Engram is he can be boom-or-bust. But the combination of Lawrence and Pederson may be just what he needs.
What if this doesn’t do the trick, though, and Engram can’t find success? Betting on himself with a one-year deal may backfire big time for the former Rebel. Not many teams may be willing to take a chance on Engram, let alone you, the fantasy player as well. My advice, sell what shares you have unless you are in a league where you can start more than one TE. Someone may offer you a decent package with this renewed optimism.
