Five Takeaways from this Years Spring Games

Spring games are nearly all completed and Andrew Harbaugh outlines five of the biggest stories thus far.

Spring games serve two purposes for the most part. Get fans hyped for the season to come and show off the shiny new toys and players who returned to school or are in new prominent roles. This Spring, we saw a lot of the latter, so much so that it should have you the dynasty and devy player foaming at the mouth.

Most, if not all, of the big teams around the country have now had their Spring game. We can all begin to digest what we saw after a college football offseason that saw a lot of change. Big coaches, big players, and with that, it has left a lot of devy assets in limbo.

What is excellent so far, a ton of them have produced, and the coaches that moved around seemed to have brought their excellence with them. A handful of players set themselves apart during the Spring games from the rest to boost their value and get us excited for the first weekend of September.

The Caleb Williams Hype Train is Still Rolling

The season Caleb Williams put together with Lincoln Riley last year was special. Even as a freshman, he looked the part from day one. It made sense when Riley jumped the wagon to Los Angeles that Williams would follow, and he did. It seems he made the right choice, too. In the spring game, they wasted no time getting to work. He completed his first nine passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns while showing excellent pocket presence and poise. It will be a fun year at USC, and Williams may cement himself as the top devy quarterback.

The Texas Offense Needs Some Grease

Anytime you bring a bunch of talented players and stars together, it is normal to have some growing pains. This is precisely what the Longhorn offense was dealing with during its Spring game. QB Quinn Ewers flashed a live arm but was missing his receivers, and running back Bijan Robinson was out with an ankle injury.

Xavier Worthy and the new transfer portal acquisition Agiyle Hall will get in sync with Ewers. Robinson will be back from injury, it will take some time, but this offense will roll when it all clicks.

Bo Nix May Have Gotten the Fresh Start He Needed

Box Nix was never anything special at Auburn, let’s be honest. He earned the starting job over one Malik Willis and was destined to follow as a great Auburn quarterback in his father’s footsteps. Nix is in a QB battle but what we have seen so far is Oregon is looking to push the ball down the field this year, and Nix has the arm to do it. His devy value has to be worse than Dogecoin, but hold out, and you may see a spike in value, or you can buy now for cheap.

Penn State is Returning to the Run Game

Last year, Penn State did not have a single game with a 100+ yard rusher. Based on the Spring games game plan, they are looking to fix that. Both Keyvonne Lee and star freshman Nick Singleton got a lot of reps, with Singelton getting some goal-line work. Lee showed some potential at times last year, but the team was down so much they could never commit to a meaningful rushing attack.

Look for that to change and look for a devy value to emerge in Lee potentially. We already know what Singleton is, but he may become a monster in this revamped Nittany Lion offense.

Jahmyr Gibbs and Christian Leary Shine for Alabama

Alabama, at this point, is a cheat code from a college football standpoint. Nick Saban has been known to grow and develop defensive players, but the amount of offense he has produced lately is unheard of. Despite his feelings on the transfer portal, Saban had no issue going out and getting Gibbs after he left Georgia Tech. Gibbs broke off several big plays in the Spring game and could give Bijan Robinson a run for his money as RB1 by the season’s end.

As for Leary, he has stepped up in the absence of three of the leading receivers of the Crimson Tide for the NFL. As a true sophomore, the sky is the limit on his stock. Invest before it is too late; it may already be.
