Dylan Sampson | Player Introduction

When Dylan Sampson chose to commit to the University of Tennessee over the likes of Mississippi State, Colorado, Michigan State, and South Carolina, he knew that he would have to wait for his turn to lead the Volunteer’s backfield. He got to Knoxville, TN as a borderline 3/4-star recruit, and sat behind Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright before taking over the starting job this past year.

During his lone season as the starter, Sampson carried the ball 258 times for 1,491 yards and 22 TDs. He added another 143 yards receiving on 20 catches out of the backfield. His standout year saw him named as a semifinalist for the Maxwell and Doak Walker awards. Additionally, he gained First Team All-SEC and Third Team All-American honors. Dylan Sampson capped off his award-filled season by winning the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Doc Matthew Mitchell’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 18 Overall Prospect | RB7

Dylan Sampson is another player I usually find myself higher on than the consensus. At just 200 pounds, he is a little on the smaller side for an NFL RB but watch what he can do when he gets a crease. Unlike some of the other RBs that I actually like better, Sampson has an extra gear. He can turn any play into a home run. He even broke a school record for rushing yards in a season that had stood since 1929! Sampson may have fallen a little bit in my 2025 Rookie Big Board but I still consider him an excellent 2nd round prospect.

Mike Johrendt’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 22 Overall Prospect | RB7

It’s safe to say that Dylan Sampson is one of the highest risers in my 2025 Rookie Big Board, going from unranked to sitting just outside my Top 20. His tape is impressive and he is an explosive back that has started to get some hype in the dynasty community. It seems that Sampson is not talked enough as he looks to have a pro-ready skillset that can immediately translate to day 1 production.

Keith Ensminger’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 28 Overall Prospect | RB13

This ranking may prove to be too low for the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Dylan Sampson. If he is drafted into just the right landing spot, he has the skill and experience to make a difference for an NFL team and score points for our dynasty rosters. Right now, however, I have concerns about his ability to adjust to NFL running schemes and defenses.

Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine RB Rankings

No. 8 Overall Running Back

Dylan Sampson burst onto the scene this year and shot up my 2025 RB Rankings and NFL Draft boards. Sampson is explosive with excellent vision to set up his blocks and has a quick first step to hit the hole once it opens. However, his best skill is his elite speed. He could be the fastest running back at the NFL Combine. But with all that speed comes one major concern: size. He’s listed at 201 pounds, but I would be surprised if he actually weighs in over 200.

Dylan Sampson | Draft Outlook

Dylan Sampson’s draft stock is rising and most recently was ranked at RB6 by Mel Kiper (ESPN+). He will likely be drafted on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. Accordingly, Dylan Sampson will come off the board early in rookie drafts. The earliest I would expect him to go is the late 1st round with the latest being the end of the 2nd round.
