A shocking development happened much earlier this off-season when the Green Bay Packers traded their All-Pro franchise wide receiver, Davante Adams, to the Las Vegas Raiders. It was a trade that seemingly came from left field as there had been whispers but not many concrete rumors. In the end, it turns out that Adams turned down a contract extension from the Packers and asked to be traded to Vegas so he could play with his best friend, Derek Carr. The two went to Fresno St. together and developed a life-long friendship. Carr isn’t Aaron Rodgers, but he’s still a great quarterback. The Las Vegas got a star WR for multiple first-round picks. So, how will Adams do in 2022 in Sin City?
2021 Season in Review
Adams had another terrific season in 2021 as a member of the Packers. He was an All-Pro for the second year in a row and a Pro Bowler for the fifth year. Adams finished as the WR2 in fantasy, averaging 21.5 ppg. He had 169 targets and caught 123 of them for 1,553 yards. Those were both career-highs. He added on 11 touchdowns for good measure. Adams continued to be a menace in the red zone and for cornerbacks. He showed no signs of letting up in his age-29 season.
2022 Season Projections
Adams is going to have a lot of pressure this year to perform. The team not only paid a lot to trade for him but then gave him a massive 5-year contract worth $141+ million. He’s going to be expected to continue to put up top-flight numbers during his early-30s. A season under 100 receptions and 1,200 yards would be an extreme let-down. He’s supposed to lift this offense and allow Hunter Renfrow/Darren Waller to excel in single-coverages.
Then, it’s a good thing I predict Adams gets past both barriers to post another top WR season. I see him not going to the 2020/21 levels due to the presence of Waller/Renfrow and because Carr isn’t Rodgers. This doesn’t mean that Adams isn’t going to be a WR1. He definitely will be. I have him averaging 17.4 PPR points. That’s a great number for your WR1 on a contending team in dynasty. Adams has another excellent season in store.
Buy/Sell Davante Adams?
If you just won the championship last year and have an aging roster, I would sell Adams. He’s already 30 and will likely start to go downhill sooner than later. While his game doesn’t rely on speed, he will slow down eventually. It’s better to sell high than low. I’d consider it if you could get a mid-first and a second. Two late-firsts are ideal. There are zero reasons for him to be on a rebuilding roster. He’s going to score too much and screw up your draft pick spot.
If you’re contending, I would look to acquire Adams. He shouldn’t cost much compared to the points he will put up. If you can trade him for a late first and a second, I’d gladly do it. He has at least two elite years left, so Adams will be set up well to help your contending team win. Just be sure that you will compete in the next two years.
Summary
Adams is an elite WR in real life and fantasy. He will score a ton of points this year as the leader of the offense out in Las Vegas. He has a strong connection with Carr already. Look for Adams to put up another WR1 season. If you’re rebuilding or about to rebuild, trade him now. If you’re contending, go get him or keep him. Just be sure you’re contending as you don’t want to be stuck with Adams beyond his elite years.
