LAST WEEK
Another week of the NFL season has passed, and my predictions are finally starting to roll in a positive direction.
My starts of the week started strong, with Brock Purdy being the QB2 of the week. Purdy finished with 314 passing yards and four touchdowns. Russell Wilson struggled at times but matched his ECR of QB11. He finished with 186 passing yards, a TD, and three INTs, but he also had a rushing touchdown.
In Week 13, my sits of the week went a perfect 2-0. Kyler Murray did not need to use his running game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Murray finished as QB21. Baker Mayfield had a couple of big plays but struggled overall. He finished as QB19 with 202 passing yards, a TD, and an INT.
WEEK 14 STARTS
Justin Fields, CHI, QB8
Fields has played in two games since his injury in Week 6. In points per game, he is 16th with 17.9 PPG. Fields has three top-10 performances this season. Even though he has missed four games this season, Fields is fourth among QBs with 400 rushing yards.
The Lions have been in six games this season with scoring of 50 points or more. The Lions are 26th in the NFL in points allowed to the QB position, giving up 19.9 FPPG. In the last four games, the Lions have given up an average of 23.2 FPPG to QBs. Another layer to this defense is that they gave up the fifth most rushing yards to QBs with 282 yards.
In Week 14, Fields has an ECR of QB8. In Week 11 against the Lions, he had a QB8 finish with 21.2 points. Fields needs to be productive in the run game if he wants to be effective this week. He is a must-start in all formats.
Joshua Dobbs, MIN, QB12
Dobbs became a Minnesota Viking before Week 9. Between Week 9 and Week 12, he averaged 19.1 PPG, tenth in the NFL. Overall, Dobbs has had five top-12 performances in 2023.
The Las Vegas Raiders defense has been inconsistent so far in 2023. The Raiders’ pass defense is tenth in the NFL, allowing 16.8 FPPG to the QB position. However, they are giving up 21.2 FPPG in the last three games. One negative against the Raiders’ defense is that they give up the third most yards after catch with 1,614 yards.
With the playoffs in jeopardy, look for Justin Jefferson to return in week 14. Dobbs will look to have a bounce-back game against the Raiders. This week, he is a must-start in SF leagues and a borderline top-12 quarterback.
WEEK 14 SITS
Justin Herbert, LAC, QB9
Herbert is QB6 on the season. He has finished eight of his twelve games as a top-12 QB. Since his Week 5 bye, Herbert has been very inconsistent. He has finished with under 15 points in four of his last eight games.
The Broncos defense started the season horribly but have turned it around as of late. In the last three weeks, the Broncos have given up 17.1 FPPG to the QB position. That is 13th in the NFL. In the previous five games, the Broncos defense had 15 total turnovers. The Broncos were 4-1 in those games and gave up 15 PPG.
Even with Herbert’s struggles as of late, he has an ECR of QB9. The Chargers running game has struggled mightily as of late, which has put more pressure on Herbert in the passing game. If you have Herbert on your roster, you must start him but temper your expectations. I expect him to finish outside the top 12 in week 14.
CJ Stroud, HOU, QB12
In his rookie season, Stroud is so far QB5 this season. He has been a top 24 QB in every game this season and a top 12 quarterback in five of those games. He currently leads the NFL with 3,540 passing yards and only has five interceptions.
The strength of the New York Jets in 2023 has been their defense. The Jets are seventh in the NFL, giving up 15.7 FPPG to the QB position. As of late, they have stepped up their game, being fifth in the last five games in FPPG allowed to QBs. The Jets have allowed the third-fewest passing yards in the NFL with 2,119.
Stroud is coming into this week with an ECR of QB12. Stroud has struggled on the road, only averaging 15.48 PPG. The Texans are facing the Jets offense, which will likely struggle to score points. Stroud has been a strong player most of the year, but this is a game where he might not need to score many fantasy points for the Texans to win. I recommend sitting Stroud in 1QB leagues this week.
