Cam Ward Introduction | Rookie Profile

To say that Cam Ward was an unheralded recruit coming out of high school would be like saying Tiger Woods is a decent golfer. Coming out of West Columbia, TX, Ward was a 0-star wing-T QB prospect. He took an offer from Division III Incarnate Word (San Antonio, TX) out of high school. In 6 games during his freshman season, Ward threw for 2,260 yards with 24 TDs and only 4 INTs. In 2021, he blossomed, erupting for 4,648 yards passing with 47 TDs and 10 INTs, winning the Jerry Rice Award.

After that season, his head coach (Eric Morris) left to become the offensive coordinator at Washington State. Ward followed. After throwing for nearly 7,000 yards in 2 seasons for the Cougars, Ward briefly considered the NFL, but instead, left the Pacific Northwest for the beaches of Miami. In his lone season for the Hurricanes, he was spectacular. As a well-traveled player, Ward is one of the most-experienced QBs in recent memory, having started over 50 games at the collegiate level.

Keith Ensminger’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 1 Overall Prospect | Ranked QB1

Keith: As the dust settles on the 2024 season, the consensus remains that the 2025 NFL Draft class is below average at the quarterback position, but the standout player for me continues to be Miami’s Cam Ward. His season was remarkable, as he averaged 331 passing yards per game with a solid 37:9 touchdown to interception ratio. Ward has demonstrated his ability to take care of the football, but perhaps even more importantly for fantasy football enthusiasts, he showcased enough of a rushing upside to add even more value, contributing four rushing touchdowns this season.

I love cheering for underdog stories like Cam Ward. To be clear, he’s not a fully polished prospect. I recently heard a fellow dynasty analyst describe Cam Ward as “bored,” and I agree. Ward is ready for the challenge of the NFL. He is a consensus lock to be a top-five pick in this spring’s NFL Draft, and I am a firm believer in valuing quarterbacks above all other positions in SuperFlex drafts. Ward is a no-brainer pick for my top SuperFlex rookie on my 2025 Rookie Big Board, and I would absolutely draft Ward over Ashton Jeanty.

Doc Matthew Mitchell’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 2 Overall Prospect | Ranked QB1

Doc: Cam Ward has grown on me throughout the season. Beginning his career at Incarnate Word and continuing through his stop at Washington State before eventually making it to Miami, Cam Ward has been a prolific passer. He has excellent arm strength and good overall size for the position. He does need to clean up some of his aggressive tendencies, but you don’t want to change his belief in himself that led him to win the Davey O’Brien Award this past season.

I do not expect Cam Ward to put up eye-popping rushing numbers in the NFL. However, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have the ability to make plays with his legs. He has excellent mobility within the pocket, routinely displaying the ability to evade the rush while keeping his vision downfield to get the ball to open players. I believe Ward will be the top QB taken in the NFL draft and as a result, he is extremely worthy of this selection. Were it not for the extremely high upside of Ashton Jeanty, Ward would be my top ranked player.

Mike Johrendt’s Top 50 Rookie Big Board

No. 2 Overall Prospect | Ranked QB1

Mike: My new QB1 is Miami’s Cam Ward, who is the most polished signal caller in this year’s class. In his lone year with the Hurricanes, Ward threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns. Additionally, he rushed for another 204 yards and 4 scores. Ward was the offense for the Hurricanes, being asked to throw it at least 35 times on 8 different occasions.

Some questions surround his accuracy and decision making, but nonetheless, Ward is the real deal. In contention for the first overall pick in April, you can trust that Ward can solve your QB woes.

Tristan Cook’s Pre-NFL Combine 2025 Quarterback Rankings 3.0

No. 2 Overall Prospect | Ranked QB2

Tristan: Miami’s Cam Ward has steadily ascended up my QB rankings. Most recently, Ward made his way into Tier 1 of my QBs. While I have Sanders ahead of him, that doesn’t mean I’m not a believer in Ward’s ability. His meteoric rise from Division III to Heisman finalist is one for the history books. Cam Ward has a cannon for an arm and is a bigger threat than Sanders to beat you with his legs.

However, where Ward struggles is with consistency from play to play and game to game in terms of his accuracy and ability to throw receivers open with touch passes. As of now, Cam Ward is the odds-on favorite to be taken with the 1st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. I think you’ll see Ward as QB1 on most rankings lists, but I have him just below the aforementioned Shedeur Sanders.

Cam Ward’s Outlook | Rookie Profile

Cam Ward is all but guaranteed to be drafted in the top-5 picks of the 2025 NFL Draft. Most draft analysts have him as the top-rated QB in the class. As such, Ward should be a top-3 selection of every SuperFlex rookie draft and is in contention for the 1.01 selection.
