High School
Tyree Wilson is an EDGE player from New London, Texas. Wilson was a three-star recruit from West Rusk High School. He was a standout player in high school, recording 11.5 sacks over three seasons. He would earn first-team All-District honors as a junior and be named Defensive MVP as a senior. The Texas native received over twenty scholarship offers out of high school before committing to Texas A&M.
College
Wilson appeared in 12 games during his first collegiate season at Texas A&M. He averaged just over a tackle per game and finished the season with three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The developing EDGE rusher showed promise at Texas A&M but decided to transfer after the 2019 season and enroll at Texas Tech University.
The Texas native made an immediate impact on the Red Raiders’ defense. Wilson played defensive end and tackle as he adjusted to a new defensive system. He would record just ten tackles and 1.5 sacks in his first season at Texas Tech. Wilson’s second season would be much better; he stepped up as a starter. Wilson played in all 13 games, recording 38 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks.
During his senior year, Wilson continued to improve and played in ten games, recording 61 stops including 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Wilson was playing at an extremely high level before an injury cost him the final two games of the season. He was named one of 20 finalists for the Bednarik Award and first-team All-American by various media outlets and was named to the All-Conference team in the Big-12.
Strengths
Wilson is a versatile EDGE player who can line up on either side of the defensive line. His ideal size and length allow him to overpower offensive linemen with strength and agility. Wilson’s ability to disrupt the backfield is what sets him apart. He has an explosive first step and can get to the quarterback quickly. Wilson is also very effective against the run, as he can read and react to plays. His combination of size, strength, and athleticism makes him a potential star in the NFL and a consistent fantasy scorer.
This is one of my favorite types of plays that I watched from Wilson in college. These plays lead me to believe he can be a top-level DL in dynasty leagues. We all know what he can do as a pass rusher due to his strength and size. The ability to stop the run like this will make him a more reliable contributor because it gives him a safe tackle floor. We rely too often on big plays to win weekly matchups. Most dynasty managers will tell you that a player who can deliver a consistent tackle average is easier to plug into your lineup each week.
Weaknesses
There’s not much to dislike when watching the Texas Tech EDGE. Wilson’s main weakness is his lack of consistency. Although he has shown flashes of brilliance, he can sometimes disappear during games. He must develop more pass-rush moves and techniques to reach his full potential. Additionally, he needs to be coached on his hand usage and improve his ability to disengage from blockers. Sometimes he can attack the line of scrimmage with his pad level too high, which will hurt his development in the NFL if he doesn’t change that.
Overall, Wilson has the physical tools and potential to become a dominant edge player in the NFL. He needs to continue to work on his game and develop his skills to become a complete player. Dynasty fantasy football owners should keep an eye on him and consider drafting him as a long-term investment.
Landing Spot
I don’t see any scenario where Wilson isn’t a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft. There have been rumors that NFL general managers strongly consider him ahead of Will Anderson, who has been regarded as the best EDGE prospect for over a year. Wilson possesses the size, speed, and power that NFL quarterbacks lose sleep over trying to prepare for.
If we are going to believe what has been reported, Wilson will not make it past the sixth overall selection. The Detroit Lions reportedly love him as a player, and pairing him with 2022 first-round pick Aidan Hutchinson could be a huge boost to the defense. The Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and Seattle Seahawks all would be enticing landing spots for Texas Tech EDGE, and all have draft picks in the top five of the NFL Draft.
Fantasy Outlook
Wilson can be a high-impact performer as a rookie in dynasty fantasy football. In most scenarios, I urge managers to be patient with rookies and not be afraid to stash players. When it comes to DL in IDP fantasy football, you can’t afford to wait, sadly, because the position seems to be the weakest when it comes to depth.
Wilson is a freak athlete with great size, and NFL teams would not be drooling over this player as a top-five NFL draft pick if he wasn’t expected to play and produce right away. Wilson has shown steady improvement over his college career. I would expect the same when he gets to the NFL. IDP managers should not hesitate to use an early IDP draft pick on him if the landing spot and draft capital are what we expect them to be.
The Wrap-up
The time is here. We are so close to the NFL Draft and finally figuring out where the hyped-up rookie will end up. This is a bittersweet time of the year because the projecting who will draft a player and what round became a reality. On the flip side, we now know who they will be playing for and how they fit into that system.
