The ongoing debate on who the top dynasty fantasy quarterback is has been going on for years. If you’re in the Superflex startup draft, there are only two options at 1.01. Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes.
On one side, Allen is a highly explosive runner who can break off a big play anytime.
On the other hand, most people see Mahomes as the best quarterback in the NFL. Mahomes is a good runner with unreal arm talent, which gives him upside through the roof.
Both players are incredibly talented, but the question remains: who is the better dynasty option?
Josh Allen
Let’s start with Allen. At only 26 years old, he had his breakout season in 2020, averaging 24.7 PPG. Allen is a dual-threat quarterback with the upside to break fantasy football.
Allen struggled to put everything together early in his career, mainly with his throw power and accuracy. However, since the arrival of Sean McDermott, Allen has taken his game to the next level and is a legitimate star.
With Allen, you have some concerns about the beating he takes despite his extremely large frame. In dynasty, longevity is essential, so this is a knock against Allen.
Furthermore, Allen broke out with the arrival of Stefon Diggs, who is 29 years old. This creates some uncertainty with the Buffalo Bill’s offense for the long term. Besides Diggs, the team has no other elite-level options. These are two small red flags; however, bringing these points up is necessary when comparing two elite-level quarterbacks.
Patrick Mahomes
On the other hand, Mahomes has been a superstar since his breakout season in 2018. He went nuclear in his first season starting, averaging 26.1 PPG and scoring 52 total touchdowns. Mahomes has maintained this level of dominance ever since, averaging 23.48 PPG since he won the starting job.
Mahomes’s arm talent and ability to improvise outside the pocket make him so good. While Mahomes also has some concerns about his long-term playmakers, the Chiefs haven’t had a superstar wide receiver in years.
Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ number-one target, is 33 and likely on the way out, but until then, he’ll remain one of the best weapons in football. It’s also worth noting that Andy Reid is one of the best offensive minds in the league. This will benefit Mahomes no matter who’s lined up beside him.
Conclusion
All in all, Mahomes has the edge. He is only 27 years old and doesn’t have to rely on his rushing ability, which will give him an extended career. In addition, the Chiefs have a great coach in Andy Reid and the best tight end in the league for the next few years.
On top of this, the Chiefs have one of the best offensive lines in the league, as they were ranked fourth by PFF at the end of the 2022 NFL season. Mahomes has also been great from a real-life standpoint, already winning two super bowls. This helps ensure that Mahomes will be a starting quarterback for the rest of his career.
Allen and Mahomes are excellent cornerstone assets to build your dynasty team. Nevertheless, most of the dynasty community agrees that Mahomes is the better option.
So far this offseason, according to South Harmon ADP, which has over 650 drafts, Mahomes is the consensus 1.01. Once again, both are great players, but Mahomes is the way to go.
