Devy Paradise: Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns facing a rebuild but Steve Sarkisian is using the offense to fast track things, @MandrewNFL breaks down what makes Texas a Devy Paradise as he starts a new series on Dynasty Nerds.

Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young, Roy Williams, and Jamaal Charles are just a few of the many skill players that the Longhorns have produced. While I would bet my life savings that no one had Campbell or Williams on a devy roster, the new look Longhorns have plenty of faces you know.

The Texas Longhorns are in the middle of a complete facelift as a program. Stadium renovations paired with a new staff trying to get in its groove have fans eager for change and devy players excited for the talent on hand.

New head coach Steve Sarkisian brought over a great staff when he left Alabama in 2020. He didn’t have the season he had hoped for in 2021, but 2022 and beyond look pretty good for everyone.

The Current State of Affairs

Right now, one could argue that no roster in all of college football has more talent for devy than the Texas Longhorns. Every skill position has at least one big name to be excited about.

The quarterback room is headlined by Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers. He and his mullet have high expectations. He has all the skill players and supports around him to succeed. Expectations will be high with instant gratification on the move. When you have the potential top receiver in 2024 in Xavier Worthy, Jahleel Billingsley at TE, and maybe even more depth on the way after adding Agiye Hall in from the transfer portal, you should be good right off the bat.

Looking at the RB position to cap things off, you have the best prospect since Saquon Barkley in Bijan Robinson. Robinson is a complete back with rare vision and receiving ability and a tremendous blocker. All those things make for a generational talent at the position. Yes, everyone hates that term but deal with it.

Coaching Staff

Headlining the coaching staff is, of course, Steve Sarkisian. Coming over from Alabama, he is seen as the perfect man for the job after several guys who just didn’t fit the bill. Sarkisian previously was the head coach at Washington and USC before stepping down due to personal issues. Since then, however, he has snapped back and became one of the best assistants in college football.

He would join the Alabama staff in 2019 and be there for two seasons. During that time, the Crimson Tide went from a defensive team to an offensive. He would coach up a total of 12 offensive players drafted in just that short period of time. While this past season at Texas wasn’t what he had hoped for, he could start to send talent from Austin to the league sooner than you may think.

Incoming Recruits and Transfers

As things stand currently, the Longhorns currently have the 19th ranked recruiting class for 2023, according to 247 Sports. They have four 4-star recruits committed, headlined by WR Ryan Niblett out of Houston. Texas also has a commitment from RB Tre Wisner, an in-state product.

They have been doing the team building in the transfer portal, though. Texas brought in key offensive pieces Jahleel Billingsley, Agiye Hall, and are in the running for Pittsburgh receiver Jordan Addison. The 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner in Addison has some ties to Texas as his receiver coach Brennan Marion is now in Austin. If they can bring in Addison, it will show that Sarkisian and his staff are full-steam ahead.

This program is already a devy paradise as is, but the addition of Addison would make it a devy private island. Fun times are ahead in Austin for the Texas Longhorns regardless, but Addison could turn things on their head.
