Number One Recruiting Class in 2022
The Texas A&M Aggies stole the show in the football recruiting department in 2022. Head Coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff put together the number one recruiting class this season. The Aggies class is also considered one of the most decorated recruiting classes in 247 Sports Recruiting Rankings history. It’s even talked about as the best in college football history! This class features eight five-star recruits, including QB Connor Weigman, WR Evan Stewart, DL Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, DL Shemar Stewart, CB Denver Harris, and many more!
Although this year’s class has set historical measures for A&M recruiting, expectations will be at an all-time high for Fisher. The Aggies need to win the National Championship, which they haven’t done since 1939. The class of 2022 will be leaned on heavily this season to overcome the odds and reach heights never reached before. Freshman phenom Evan Stewart might be the player the Aggies need for them to defeat the odds!
High School Career
Stewart attended Liberty High School in Frisco, Texas, where he would go on to set elite marks as a receiver in receptions (111), yards (2,157), and total touchdowns (21). He ultimately emerged as a 5-Star recruit, and the #2 ranked WR in the nation. According to On3 Consensus rankings, Stewart is among the few elite athletes to earn a five-star plus rating in the 2022 class. Despite his rise to stardom as a high school athlete, Stewart only played three games his senior season – posting a 22-487-3 stat line – before opting out and enrolling at A&M.
According to 247sports, Stewart’s decision to opt out of his senior season was motivated by a “disagreement” with the Liberty coaching staff. He also shared his thoughts on the situation on Twitter to clarify his reasons for opting out.
Aside from football, Stewart is also a prolific track athlete. He excelled in multiple events such as long-jump, triple-jump, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4×200, and 4×400 meter relays. Stewart won the Texas 5A long jump title as a junior with a 24’6.5″ leap. He also posted elite times in the 100-meter dash (10.58) and 200-meter dash (21.08).
Fisher seems ecstatic about the true freshman and what he can do for the Aggies this season. In an article written by Jonathan Wagner, Fisher shared his thoughts on Stewart and what he has done so far since he’s been with A&M. “Effort in the off-season, not just on the field, every day in the off-season program he was out front leading everybody.” Fisher also raved on his character and attributes of Stewart by saying he’s “a tremendous human being with a tremendous attitude, great work ethic, and desire to be great.”
Player Profile
The freshman phenom is entering his freshman season at 5’11” and 170 lbs of pure athleticism and explosiveness. When you turn on the tape, it’s hard to ignore the kid’s abilities as a player. Stewart possesses a rare combination of elite traits; explosiveness, quickness, and speed – verified by his impressive track background. He is also a polished route-runner in the passing game’s short, intermediate, and deep levels. It makes him a triple threat playmaker for anyone he matches up against. Stewart also has superb acrobatics in adjusting to the football, demonstrating great vertical bounce in high-pointing the ball.
Stewart can also switch up his game to throw off defenses. He can attack coverage and leverage with any move, making it difficult for defenders to get a read on his routes. Stewart also has the patience and understanding to beat defenders with creative releases off the L.O.S. From a speed release to a hesitation release, Stewart always keeps his defenders guessing in the passing game. Once Stewart catches the ball, the defense better get their hands on him. He can take it the distance with a little window of separation with outstanding run-after-catch speed.
What to Expect In 2022
Although Stewart is rapidly improving as a player in Texas A&M’s offense, he is still only a freshman that will continue to grow and make mistakes as the season goes on. As a starter, Stewart will face tough opponents in the SEC conference. Corners Elias Ricks (Alabama) and Kelee Ringo (Georgia) are among the best in the nation. Elite performers rise to the occasion and overcome challenging obstacles to achieve their goals. The Aggies’ highly anticipated recruit possesses all of the intangibles to become a dominant force at the receiver position, but how will he measure up against elite SEC competition? Will he rise to the occasion or fold under pressure? Only time will tell to see what this potential phenom brings to the table this 2022 season.
