2023 Dynasty Rookie Profile: Jordan Addison, WR

Jordan Addison is one of the top receivers in the 2023 NFL draft class. @ReflipeWThenuz breaks down the player and his skill set.

Profile

  • Name: Jordan Addison
  • School: Pittsburgh/USC
  • Year: Junior
  • Position: Wide Receiver
  • Size: 6’0 175 lbs.

Background

Jordan Addison is one of my favorite receivers in the 2023 NFL draft class. He enters the NFL after three quality seasons of college production. One of those seasons was good enough to win him the coveted Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. There is little doubt that he will hear his name called within the first couple rounds of the upcoming draft.

Addison came to the University of Pittsburgh as a lightly heralded recruit out of Tuscarora High School in Frederick, Maryland. He chose Pitt over other schools, including Maryland, East Carolina, James Madison, and Kent State. 247sports.com had him ranked as the #12 prospect in the State of Maryland.

During his time in High School, Addison made plays all over the field. Watching his school highlight film, you can see why he was listed as an athlete. He makes plays as both a running back and wide receiver. He also made numerous plays on special teams.

Addison took the skills he flashed on the High School fields of Maryland and headed to the ACC. There he spent two years playing with 2022 1st-round quarterback Kenny Pickett. It was in this second year that Jordan exploded and put up an all-time great year. After the departure of his quarterback, Addison decided to head west and transferred to USC. This decision was fraught with mixed results as his production dipped, and he dealt with some injury issues. All the same, his lone year in Southern California saw him once again put up quality production. You can see his career college stats below.

Film Breakdown Pros

When you watch Jordan Addison play wide receiver, one of the first things that pop off the screen is that he has nice feet and excellent body control. He is the type of player who can make you miss in a phone booth. During his time at Pittsburgh, in particular, the coaching staff loved getting the ball in his hands on receiver screens and letting Addison make plays in the open field, as you can see below.

As you would expect with a prolific Biletnikoff award-winning receiver Addison also has excellent hands. He does a fine job of extending his arms and catching the ball away from his body when possible. Despite his slight frame, Addison also does an excellent job catching the ball in traffic. You can see examples of his hands on the perimeter and in traffic below.

Addison also does a nice job of creating separation. Both on his release and in his route, he has displayed the ability to leave defenders in the dust. You can see a couple of nice examples of this ability below.

One final strength to highlight for Addison is his long speed. While he is certainly not Tyreek Hill, he does bring a nice amount of gas to the table. On numerous occasions, he got behind defenders and burned them for long scores. You can see a couple of examples of this below.

Film Breakdown Cons

When doing a tape study on Jordan Addison, there is a lot to like about the player. However, that does not mean there aren’t areas of his game he needs to work on. The first con which is immediately available is his slim build. Despite being a willing blocker, he will have a harder time at the next level in the running game.

One final area Jordan Addison would need to work on at the next level is his concentration. Despite having some really nice hands, you can find a couple of examples of concentration drops. Due to his clear talent, I can only assume that concentration is the issue at hand.

Conclusion

Overall, Jordan Addison is one of the best receivers in the entire 2023 draft class. While he may not possess the ceiling of someone like Quentin Johnson, his floor is higher than anyone else in the class. I have zero doubt that Addison will succeed at the NFL level. He is a smooth player who can succeed in the slot and on the perimeter. He has an extremely high football IQ. It was pretty difficult to pick out a couple of issues that I didn’t like about this young man. I find his game to fall somewhere between Stefon Diggs and DeVonta Smith. It will be fun to see where he lands. Exactly where that is will likely dictate his near-term ceiling, but one thing is for sure, Jordan Addison will be an asset for his NFL team and your dynasty squads.
